Reading

Key Stage 1

Reading is taught using synthetic phonics.  We have our own bespoke system which is methodical and planned in phases. Phonics is taught from reception. It is built around action and repetition. Teachers apply it to writing.

Children are listened to read. Reading is developed through guided reading sessions where there is an emphasis on ensuring pupils have de-coding strategies as well as understanding of the text

Library visit

Foundation class visiting the library

At Winteringham Primary School we would like to encourage you to read with your child at home. All of our children have passwords for Oxford Owl on line reading books which they can access both at home and school. When children read at home we ask that this is recorded in their reading record and then we will reward in school with team points.

Our aim is to foster a love of reading.  We involve pupils in selecting the books we have in our library.

We use our scheme books to teach the basics of reading and allow the children to choose their own books when they are competent.

Twice a year at our school fair we have a book stall giving parents opportunity to buy high  quality books for £2 each.

All pupils are given a free book on Pyjamara Day!

Key Stage 2

In Key Stage 2 reading is taught in guided reading sessions unless chldren need more support in fluency.

Guided reading is mostly based on understanding and pupils learn to answer a variety of types of questions.

A catch up interventio is in place for pupils who need to develop fluency in reading.  This involves daily 1:1 reading.
